The industry proposal for the new National Packaging Covenant (NPC) includes an extensive list of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs). These will provide agreed quantifiable measures that reflect the critical success factors for the new NPC. At the December 2004 meeting of the Environment Protection and Heritage Council, Ministers decided to strengthen the NPC proposal by setting achievable, ambitious targets relating to resource efficiency, packaging waste, recycling and recycled content.
Performance indicators are important to monitor the overall success or failure of the NPC in meeting community standards for environmentally responsible packaging. They are also important for individual organisations, to assist them in determining priorities and strategies to achieve resource use efficiency and reductions in environmental impact.
SPA’s 6th Round Table explored the potential and feasibility of indicators and tools to assist packaging supply chain companies in meeting sustainable packaging goals and targets. Commercial users of environmental impact tools outlined their experiences and approaches to build on the outcomes of SPA’s 3rd Round Table (Packaging Design for Sustainability) and the results of a recent SPA workshop with food brand owners to scope a proposed Packaging Impact Quick Evaluation Tool© (PIQET).
